The leader of the Party of Socialists Igor Dodon proposed setting presidential elections for February 29. In a news conference on January 25, the MP voiced hope that this will be the last attempt and it will be successful, Info-Prim Neo reports. “A relevant decision was drafted and signed and will be submitted today to Parliament to be registered. We urge civil society to set up an anti-crisis committee and, together with us, to identify and field an apolitical candidate for the February 29 elections,” said Igor Dodon. He also said that the referendum planned by the Alliance for European Integration is not a solution to the political crisis and if the plebiscite is held, the result will not be the projected one. “If the lawmakers do not approve our group’s proposal, the Socialists will call on the people to boycott the referendum or to vote against the ruling alliance’s initiative. We will then waste 70 million lei and will stir things up. Afterward, they will return to the same solution,” said Igor Dodon. He stressed again that the candidate for the presidency must be apolitical, no matter whether this candidate is put forward by civil society, the parties of the ruling alliance or the parliamentary opposition.
