Representatives of the Ministry of Health announced a slight decline in the number of patients diagnosed with COVID-19. The figure is by 12% lower than a week before. However, the number of severe forms of COVID-19 remains high and a record number of deaths was reached. According to specialists, this is probably the peak of the current pandemic wave. However, even if the number of infected persons decreases, the number of patients who succumb to the disease will remain high for two-three more weeks, IPN reports.
Daniela Demișcan, division head at the Ministry of Health, said statistics show a slight decrease in the daily number of new cases of COVID-19. The critical period when the health system was overburdened was probably overcome, but the figures of persons with serious forms of the disease and of deaths remain high.
“The municipalities of Chisinau and Bălți, the districts of Vulcănești and Glodeni and the left side of the Nistru are under red alert. The cases of COVID-19 decreased in number by 12% on a week before. The number of deaths rose by 5%, while the number of cured persons declined by 7%. These indicators point to the aggressiveness of the Delta variant and to the nonobservance of the public health measures. Also, the persons ask for medical assistance too late,” Daniela Demișcan stated in the talk show “Moldova Live” on the public TV channel M1.
Deputy health officer of Chisinau Boris Gîlca said the burden on the health system has decreased, but only as regards cases of medium gravity. In the municipality of Chisinau, the intensive care units continue to work at full capacity.
“Despite the slight decline in the number of cases, we remain concerned about the extremely severe cases. We now have enough beds for admitting patients with moderate and severe forms, but are short of beds in intensive care units. These are vacated when patients die and this is our tragedy. We hope we are at the peak of this wave and the number of cases will decrease. Even if a decrease is witnessed, we will see a high number of deaths during two-three more weeks,” stated Boris Gîlca.
Victor Cojocaru, director of the Intensive Therapy Clinic of “Timofei Moșneaga” National Hospital, said the institution copes with the high number of patients with difficulty owing to the overtiredness of the medical staff.
“At the start of the pandemic, we saw panic and fear. Now we see carelessness as the mask is practically not worn. In intensive care units, we have what we need, but the doctors and assistants are overtired. We need to double the medical personnel in intensive care units. There is one doctor for 14 patients, most of whom are intubated,” noted Victor Cojocaru.
Another 1,483 cases of COVID-19 were reported in Moldova yesterday. Also, 49 persons succumbed to the disease. According to the Ministry of Health, 32 of the 213 patients with COVID-19 who are in a critical condition were put on a ventilator.
