Dinu Plîngău: Over 120,000 citizens emigrated over past two years

The government blames all the problems in society on the war in Ukraine, but there are areas that have no connection with the regional context, but stagnate, the leader of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” (PPDA) Dinu Plîngău stated in a public debate hosted by IPN. According to him, the justice sector reform and the fight against corruption are stalling, which is confirmed by public perception and reports by international entities.

The politician noted that there are extremely many questions to the PAS government three years after taking power and two years after submitting the application for EU membership. The most important social and economic areas are stagnating, leading to the massive exodus of the population abroad.

“At several levels, including those related to the EU’s conditions, the government hasn’t taken very determined steps. It goes to the justice sector reform, alleviation of the crisis in the economy, lack of strategies and views for developing different sectors of the economy. We don’t have a clear strategy in the social sector, except for compensation to individuals following the experienced crises. There are many questions as regards good governance. Because of this, the people’s perception does not change. As a result, in the statistics of the National Bureau of Statistics we see massive emigration of the population. Over 120,000 citizens have emigrated over the past two years. In parallel, more than 36,000 jobs in the real sector were closed. The economy suffers and in the absence of an appropriate response to these crises, the consequences for the population will be dramatic,” said Dinu Plîngău.

The leader of PPDA noted that that the opening of accession negotiations and the gaining of access to pre-accession funds will ensure economic development and increase the living standards of the population. The PAS government managed to overcome the energy crisis only with the support of the development partners.

“The only opportunity is to open negotiations and access funds on a number of chapters, funds that can reinvigorate processes in the social and economic sectors. We are a small state and we don’t need so large sources and investments to revitalize particular segments. No one challenges the fact that the Republic of Moldova has faced crises that are not necessarily related to governance or the internal situation. The overcoming of the energy crisis was a success, but in the energy sector there are also many questions related to procurement, and the Prosecutor’s Office even confirmed the initiation of criminal proceedings on the performance of these acquisitions. In addition, we must admit that the possibility of compensating the citizens was based on the support of the foreign partners,” explained the politician.

Dinu Plîngău expressed his indignation at the fact that the government shifts responsibility for all the problems in the country onto the war in Ukraine and the regional context. According to him, the justice sector reform, which requires exclusively political will, is stagnating.

“My biggest objection is that all the problems are justified by the regional context and the war. There are areas that have nothing to do with the war. For example, the situation in the judiciary system. This is a matter of political will. The message of the government during the election campaign was based on the fight against corruption, the cleaning of justice. There are many questions here. In public perception, but also according to reports by foreign experts, we have hardly advanced. The Republic of Moldova has experienced shame internally and externally because of the appointment of the prosecutor general, which failed,” stated Dinu Plîngău.

The public debate entitled “What traces “two years of decisive steps on the European path” have left” was the 301th installment of IPN’s project “Developing Political Culture through Public Debates” which is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
