Differing opinions about common nonparty candidate for presidential elections

Experts have opposing opinions about the “Dignity and Truth Platform” Party’s proposal to identify a common nonparty candidate for this year’s presidential elections, IPN reports.

Director of the Institute for Strategic Initiatives Vladislav Kulminski said the proposal formulated by the leader of the PPPDA Andrei Năstase as regards a common nonparty candidate for President is not feasible. By such a move, Andrei Năstase is trying to save his political career.

“After he lost the Chisinau mayoral elections, he is trying to find a new challenge to remain in high politics. This proposal does not mean that Mister Năstase will be the common candidate. What is important is that Maia Sandu should not be the candidate,” Vladislav Kulminski stated in the talk show “Natalia Morari’s Politics” on TV8 channel.

According to him, if an apolitical candidate runs in this autumn’s elections on behalf of the ACUM Bloc, Igor Dodon will most probably win. “I believe things will calm down and everyone will sit at the negotiating table so as to choose a candidate with the best chances of winning these presidential elections. I want to say that Mister Dodon is now very powerful. He has access to all the TV channels, controls a lot of things and, to my mind, he does this wiser than Vladimir Plahotniuc. He does not make evident mistakes, does not arrest people, does not exert pressure,” stated Vladislav Kulminski.

Political commentator Corneliu Ciurea noted that Andrei Năstase, by the conditions he suggests, does not necessarily aim to prevent Maia Sandu from ruining in the upcoming elections. “What Mister Năstase does long before the elections is to formulate a series of conditions for launching a set of negotiations that will have continuity. The first step that should be taken by the PAS is to enter this game,” he stated, adding that Andrei Năstase formulated this proposals because he is in an evidently worse position than the leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity”.

On January 14, the Political Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” (PPPDA) called on the democratic political forces to take measures and identify a common nonparty candidate for the presidential elections of 2020.
