Details about €1.5m found at Leușeni customs post

The driver of a truck was arrested after customs officers of the Leușeni customs post discovered 1 570 660 euros in the vehicle’s cab. This is one the largest finds of contraband money on the border so far, IPN reports.

The Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said the money was found in a Mercedes truck registered in Moldova. This was travelling without a load, but the customs officers noticed several suspicious packs in the cab and ordered a check. A total sum of 1 570 660 euros was found in these.

The money was packed and sealed up and is kept at the Customs Post. The truck that belongs to a Moldovan international freight carrier was parked on the territory of the Leușeni customs post.

A criminal case was started over attempt to smuggle goods whose value exceeds 200 forecast monthly official average salaries. Those involved face three to ten years in jail.

On April 20, the prosecutors asked to remand in custody the 36-year-old Moldovan driver. The Ciocana branch of the Chisinau City Hall decided to place this under house arrest for 30 days. The prosecutors intend to challenge the decision to the Chisinau City Appeals Court.
