A deputy mayor and the deputy head of the Education, Youth and Sports Division of the Balti mayor’s office were arrested on suspicion of involvement in a number of cases of trading in influence, passive and active corruption. The arrests follow 30 searches conducted in this case, IPN reports.

According to the police, the suspects allegedly systematically received illicit financial means from the heads and employees of subdivisions of the Balti mayor’s office and also from the directors of institutions managed by the municipality in exchange for providing unmerited services or favors. It was also established that one of the suspects took a bribe in the amount of €200,000 for favoring an economic agent.

Following the searches carried out in the case, objects and documents important for the criminal case and cash in different currencies, in a total amount of about 400,000 lei, were seized

The detained persons are to be placed in the remand unit of the National Anticorruption Center.
