Democrats and Lib-Dems trade accusations over metal exports market
The Democratic Party (PDM) and the Liberal-Democratic Party (PLDM) are accusing each other of having interests in the metal exports market, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Democrat MP Valeriu Guma stated at the Friday's meeting in Parliament that the rationale of the draft Law on the de-monopolization of metal exports, submitted by the PLDM, aroused questions.
“For us it isn't clear why our colleagues from the PLDM insist without sound arguments to eliminate the monopoly in this sector, considering that it yields tens of millions of lei in revenues to the State Budget. This is why we think that there is a deliberate goal to drive this (state-owned Metal Feros) company to bankruptcy and then sell it into private hands. There is much insistence and pressure, and we assume there are certain interests involved”, the Democrat said.
On the other hand, Lib-Dem MP Veaceslav Ionita, who is also the chairman of the Parliament's budget and finance commission, noted that there are around 70 firms licensed to collect scrap metal in the country, but absurdly they are not authorized to export, so they are forced to sell the metal domestically at prices lower than appropriate, allowing someone to make big money just because, by law, there is a single company authorized to export.
In 2010, the state-owned Metal Feros reported sales of over 600 million lei, 46 million lei of which went to the State Budget as tax revenues.
