Democratic Party sees no need for Chairman in City Council

The Democratic Party (DP) seeks to exclude the office of chairman from the Chisinau City Council (CMC) and submitted a relevant bill to Parliament for consideration, DP leader Dumitru Diacov told a news conference Wednesday. He said the situation in the Council indicates the Communist Party’s willingness to regain power in the city by arranging early elections. The plot is simple: after six month of work all the documents adopted by the Council will be disputed in court because they do not bear the signature of an elected chairman. The respective documents will be thus declared null and void and the Council’s failure to adopt valid decisions will be the reason for holding early elections, Diacov explained. At the same conference, Diacov announced that DP has prepared a bill to amend the Constitution by including the following phrase “during his term-in-office, the President of the country shall suspend membership in political parties or organisations”. He argued the need of having this amendment by saying that a President and concurrently a party member is strongly disposed to be biased in the political dialogue. Involved in having the goals and interests of the party fulfilled, he/she inevitably employs the presidential authority in the political process in his/her party’s favour, Diacov added. DP also pleaded for a stronger centre on the political spectrum. Dumitru Diacov said he spoke with several party leaders, including the president of the Social Democracy Party Dumitru Braghis, who is likely to agree into partnership. Diacov added that the initiative came in support to an appeal made a week ago by the Social Liberal Party, which also spoke about the necessity of strengthening the centre parties.
