“Decorousness” or “conscription”?
Speaker of Parliament Marian Lupu requested the male MPs to display “conscription” (“prestatie” in Romanian) in Parliament, by wearing suits.
During the sitting held on Thursday, July 5, the speaker requested the MPs to attend the sittings dressed in suits or shirts and neckties.
“Although there are no regulations in this respect, we are working in the Parliament, so let us all agree that we will wear either suits or shirts and neckties. After all, rhis is a sign of ‘conscription’”, Lupu said.
The speaker, remarked by journalists and his colleagues for his refined manner of speaking, has been obviously off the target this time, referring in fact to “decorousness”, “prestanta” in Romanian, (according to the Dictionary: “propriety in manners and conduct”), and not to “conscription”, “prestatie” in Romanian, none of its multiple definitions being suitable for the look requested by the Speaker.
