Death penalty banned for good

The death penalty is exluded from Moldova from now on. The Parliament operated amendments to the Constitution banning this form of penal punishment. The deputies voted unanimously on Thursday, June 29, changing the art. 24 of the Constitution and excluding the article which provided for death penalty for offences made during war and risk of war. According to Nicoale Esanu, deputy minister of Justice, the definitive abolition of the death penalty is according to the tendency of Moldova to adjust the national legislation to European standards, fact representing another legal measure on the integration path within the international juridical framework. According to him, abolishing the death sentence creates the necessary premises for adhesion of RM to the second Facultative International Protocol on Civil and Political Rights, fact stipulated by the Action Plan RM-EU. Abolishing death penalty, except the deeds committed during war, has been stipulated in the Constitution of Moldova adopted in 1994.
