Day of fight against tuberculosis. Alarming situation nationally and globally

World TB Day is observed on March 24 to raise public awareness about the devastating health, social and economic effects of tuberculosis that affects millions of people globally. The Republic of Moldova is no exception and is among the countries with "increased risk of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis," IPN reports.

The theme of this year's World TB Day is "Yes! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver." The focus is on the responsibility of the authorities to implement effective policies and finance programs for early diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

International organizations emphasize the importance of cooperation in the fight against this disease, and the involvement of civil society is essential for the success of these efforts.

According to the World Health Organization, about 10.6 million people fell ill with tuberculosis in 2021, and 1.6 million people died. Global efforts to combat the disease have saved 74 million patients since 2000.

Moldova benefits from international support for the fight against tuberculosis. Since 2003, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has contributed financially to the treatment of patients and the implementation of prevention programs.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the lungs and is transmitted through the air. Infected people can spread the disease when they cough or sneeze, and the lack of a diagnosis favors the spread of the infection.

World TB Day was established to draw attention to the impact of this disease and to highlight the need for concrete action. March 24 marks the discovery of the tuberculosis bacillus by Robert Koch in 1882, a crucial moment in the development of diagnostic and treatment methods.

To reduce the number of cases, specialists recommend early diagnosis and quick access to treatment. In addition, according to specialists, correct information and awareness of the danger posed by tuberculosis contribute to reducing the spread of this disease and to protecting vulnerable communities.
