Day against drug abuse celebrated on June 26
On June 26 the International Day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking is celebrated. In 1987, the UN General Assembly decided to observe June 26 as the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking as an expression of its determination to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free of drug abuse.
On this occasion, the Assistance Program Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova against Drugs (BUMAD) organizes at the Culture and Arts Center Ginta Latina a live concert of the rock band Gandul Matei. At the concert ex-drug addicts will be present, rehabilitated due to the support of several NGOs, willing to say to other drug addicts the message not to consume drugs. BUMAD is financed by the European Union and co-financed by UNDP in Moldova, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from Chisinau.
According to the World Health Organization, people are addicted to drugs because of different reasons, as curiosity, the wish to avoid reality, to adjust to a style of life or to be accepted by others. In majority of cases, at the beginning drugs offer to the consumers exactly what they need and this is one of the most powerful reasons which make them addicted.
