Date for Presidential Elections to be set by Romania's new Government

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has clarified that, following the Constitutional Court's annulment of the presidential elections, the date for the new election will be determined by the Romanian Government, which is to be formed after consultations with the political parties recently elected to Parliament, IPN reports.

In response to numerous challenges from various parties, the Constitutional Court decided to annul the entire presidential election process.

"Now, the question on everyone's lips is, 'What comes next?' First, after the validation of the parliamentary elections, which have taken place in the meantime, the new Parliament will be convened, consultations with parliamentary parties will be held, and the new Romanian Government will be formed following the parliamentary elections", the President explained.

President Iohannis stated that the new Government would determine the dates for both rounds of the presidential election.

"What about me? Article 83, paragraph 2 of the Romanian Constitution states: ‘The President of Romania exercises their mandate until the oath is taken by the newly elected President.’ In conclusion, I will remain in office until a new President of Romania is elected", Klaus Iohannis emphasized.

On Friday, the Constitutional Court issued a ruling that annulled the elections and ordered the entire process to restart. The Court cited "multiple irregularities and violations of electoral law throughout the entire process and at all stages, which distorted the free and fair nature of the vote, undermined the equality of opportunity for electoral competitors, and compromised the transparency and fairness of the electoral campaign".
