Criminal liability for electoral bribery and the illegal financing of political parties will be increased. At least, this is what an amendment proposed by MP Igor Chiriac stipulates, IPN reports.

A group of MPs from the PAS faction has proposed legislative changes aimed at preventing the operation of successor parties to a party that has been declared unconstitutional.

“These parties have substantial similarities in organization and functioning, are illegally funded, and are involved in the political bribery of election candidates, political and opinion leaders, as well as representatives of civil society,” the amendment’s justification states.

The explanatory note of the document highlights that corrupt activities in the electoral field have specific characteristics that distinguish them from other forms of corruption, making them more challenging to combat.

A new round of public consultations on the legislative initiative will be organized in the coming days.
