Corporate volunteering is poorly developed in Moldova

In the Republic of Moldova, there are volunteering segments that developed during the last few years, but there are also areas that lag behind and these include employer-supported or corporate volunteering. Coordinator of the National Volunteer Week Nicolae Procopie, in a news conference at IPN, said the law bans the business sector from initiating volunteering programs, but the employers could offer employees the possibility of becoming involved in volunteering by reducing working hours.

The legislation on volunteering is for everyone, but emphasis is placed on the young people and many categories of people aren’t covered. When a change is seen in the section of elderly people and there are very active senior volunteers who become involved more than the young people, this opportunity must be put to good use, considers Nicolae Procopie. According to him, namely the elderly people will be most involved in volunteerism in Moldova in the near future.

Minister of Youth and Sport Victor Zubcu told the same news conference that volunteering represents not only a development model that must be encouraged at community level, but it also that form or platform where several types of mentoring interact. “Really progressive society is the one where volunteering has a considerable share. A lot of nice things in the country were done by the invisible army of volunteers. What we want as an authority is for these 700 activities (staged within the National Volunteer Week 2016, e.n.) to represent thousands of models for the young generation where the intervention area is very different,” he stated.

Deputy head of the Ministry’s Youth Division Constantin Turcanu said it is important for the Law on Volunteerism and the Government decisions that regulate volunteering to recognize the contribution and efforts made by volunteers by several mechanisms. Volunteerism is defined as work experience for young specialists who look for a job. The students can really make use of volunteering. When they ask for a place in the dorm or a budget-funded place to study, volunteers are given priority. Volunteerism is included in the length of service and the volunteer can later obtain a salary bonus or additional leave days.

“For the future, it is important for the state to have very clear mechanisms for determining the work of volunteers and its impact on society and the country’s economy. Alongside the development of society, sensitizing to the problems faced by one member or a group of members, the state will continue to work to develop mechanisms for stimulating volunteering,” stated Constantin Turcanu.

This year, the National Volunteer Week held during October 17-23 included about 700 activities. The coordinators of the event said the figure is four times higher than last year.
