Corman, Leanca to attend Gagauz parliament's meeting

Speaker Igor Corman and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca will travel Wednesday (Jan.22) to Comrat to participate in the session of the Gagauz People's Assembly, they told reporters after a Friday's meeting with the local parliament's vice presidents Demian Caraseni and Alexandr Tarnavski.

The Wednesday meeting will center on the referenda scheduled for February 2, which concern Moldova's foreign policy and the autonomy's “right to external self-determination”.

“We agreed that a working group will come to Gagauzia on Monday, and on Wednesday Speaker Igor Corman and Prime Minister Iurie Leanca will join us for the People's Assembly's meeting. All the problems will be discussed within that meeting”, said Demian Caraseni.

The working group going to Gagauzia will include MPs and ministers. Iurie Leanca said the group will address a variety of issues, including social, economic, legal and infrastructure-related.

Igor Corman stated that the central government and Gagauzia should maintain an effective dialogue, and expressed his hope that these actions will help to stabilize the situation and ease tension in the autonomy.

The People's Assembly was supposed to hold an extraordinary meeting Friday, which was canceled after the central authorities invited the local parliament's vice presidents to Chisinau for discussions.
