Constitutional Court to rule if December elections were constitutional

The Constitutional Court today, January 12, will decide if the December 16 presidential elections were constitutional or not. It will then become clear if the new January 15 elections in Parliament will take place, Info-Prim Neo reports. If the elections are invalidated, the legislative body will have to convene to abrogate the December 23 decision concerning the results of the ordinary presidential elections (voting procedure). The procedure will be thus repeated and a new date for ordinary presidential elections will be fixed. According to Tudor Deliu, chairman of the special commission for organizing the presidential elections, if the December 16 elections are declared unconstitutional, the special commission will stop work and no candidate could be thus registered. The application to the Constitutional Court was submitted by unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea, who said that the lawmakers acted illegally when they showed the ballots before throwing them into the ballot box. If the Court rules that the December 16 elections were constitutional, the special commission will continue work and will be ready to register the candidates for the presidency today by 7pm. The PCRM proposed former governor of the National Bank Leonid Talmaci for President. Political analyst Oazu Nantoi put himself forward for the post of head of state, but is to secure the support of at least 15 MPs so as to be registered as a candidate. For now, the Alliance for European Integration did not suggest a candidate. Its only candidate Marian Lupu withdrew his candidacy so that the parliamentary parties could find a compromise solution. The Alliance earlier said that it will decide today how it will act in the January 15 elections. Unaffiliated MP Mihai Godea said he will support Oazu Nantoi, while the three lawmakers of the Group of Socialists announced they will vote for Leonid Talmaci. No candidate was registered for the first November 18 elections. Only Marian Lupu ran in the December 16 elections, but he did not poll 61 votes, as required. If a candidate for the presidency does not gain at least 61 votes on January 15, the Speaker will have to dissolve Parliament and announce early legislative elections.
