Constitutional Court accepts PCRMʾs application

The Constitutional Court (CC) will examine the PCRMʾs application, whereby the party challenges the legality of the Parliamentʾs sitting of August 28, at a meeting on September 8. The decision was made at Wednesdayʾs ordinary meeting of the CC, where the judges decided that the PCRMʾs application is within the competence of the Court, the CCʾs secretariat head Maia Banarescu has told Info-Prim Neo. The PCRM filed the application on September 1. It considers that the first sitting of the legislature was illegal as the four parties that formed the Alliance for European Integration continued it in the absence of the Communists. On August 28, the Communist MPs left the assembly hall after asking for a break until September 4 in order to create their parliamentary group. When they withdrew, the members of the four anti-Communist parties elected the leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu as Speaker. After the July 29 early elections, the PLDM, PL, PDM and AMN formed the Alliance for European Integration, which holds 53 of the 101 seats of MP. It needs eight more votes to elect the head of state. The PCRM, which has 48 seats, does not recognize the Alliance and wants to form a center-left coalition.
