Communists demand dismissal of Parliament leadership

The Communist Party of Moldova (PCRM) has demanded that the Parliament's Standing Bureau resign after it rejected a request by the PCRM to convene an extraordinary meeting on the recent corporate raider attacks against several Moldovan banks, Info-Prim Neo reports. “For such a blatant and unprecedented violation of the Moldovan Constitution, regardless of the status of the perpetrator, there is just one penalty. According to the Constitution, that person should be dismissed, even when this is the head of state himself. The Communist Party is demanding the dismissal of the entire leadership of Parliament for showing total disrespect for the fundamental law and for the nation” declared MP Sergiu Sirbu, the party's legal expert. He insisted that the reasons put forward by the Standing Bureau were unfounded, unlawful and absurd, suggesting that the failure to convene that meeting demonstrated the involvement of the ruling coalition in the raider attacks. “This acts as clear evidence that those in government want to hush up what's happening in the banking sector and to keep the names of the real perpetrators secret. Not only investors were affected, but also the reputation of our country, its European integration aspirations. We have clear evidence that the talks on the Free and Comprehensive Trade Agreement with the EU will be suspended”, declared Grigore Petrenco, another Communist MP. Today the Parliament's Standing Bureau unanimously rejected the Communists' request for an extraordinary meeting citing inadequate signature endorsement. According to Lib-Dem MP Valeriu Strelet, of the total 35 signatures annexed by the Communist faction to their request, 11 were electronic signatures, meaning they were not original in the Bureau members' understanding. Those signatures belonged to Communist MPs who are on a business trip to China. Earlier the Liberal Democratic Party also requested an extraordinary meeting of the legislature. Under Art.67(2) of the Moldovan Constitution and Art.37 of the Parliament's Regulations, the legislature shall assemble for special or extraordinary meetings whenever this is requested by the President, the Speaker or one-third of MPs.
