Commemoration meeting held at Cemetery of Heroes in Chisinau

The Recovery Committee of the memorial complex “Cemetery of Heroes” located in Chisinau on May 9 staged a meeting to commemorate the Romanian soldiers and soldiers of other nationalities who were killed in both of the world wars, IPN reports.

High-ranking priests of the Romanian Orthodox Church held a requiem. The event was attended by representatives of the embassies of countries that have soldiers buried there.

Besides the over 1,000 Romanian soldiers buried at the Cemetery of Heroes, there are also soldiers of the Russian Army and soldiers from the Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, and Croatia. War prisoners from Germany, Austria, Italy and other countries are buried there, but their number is not known exactly.

The military area called “Cemetery of Heroes” existed from 1918 until 1959. It occupied a large area where the Pulmonology and Phtyziatry Institute “Chiril Draganiuc”, a residential complex and a shopping center where afterward built.
