Church becomes increasingly involved in politics, opinions

The Church during the last few years has become increasingly involved in politics and even in the state affairs, even if the Republic of Moldova is a lay state, activist Oleg Brega said in the talk show “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.

“A growing number of politicians try to polish their image with the help of the Church, while the clergy, for their part, do not hesitate to profit from the politicians with influence,” said the activist.

Oleg Brega considers that the Orthodox Church influences the population through the agency of the mass media, especially of those from Russia. “The people are zombied through the TV channels. Most of our TV channels broadcast live Sunday’s liturgy and other Orthodox services. The Russian TV channels that are retransmitted in Moldova are especially active in this regard. The main danger comes from there. But we should also not diminish the danger coming from the Romanian TB channels, which propagate orthodoxy,” he stated.

The activist believes the polls showing that 97% of Moldova’s population is orthodox do not show the reality. “Approximately the same percentage of people in the Soviet period said that they were atheists. The people fill out the questionnaire inertly. There are a number of denominations in the Moldova. I don’t think that the number of those who are of other denominations represent only 3%. I consider the really Orthodox Christians are those who go to church and these represent not more than 10%,” stated Brega.
