Cholera found in three Chisinau lakes

The Chisinau Public Health Center has found three lakes in the municipality – Vatra, La Izvor, and Valea Morilor – to be contaminated with the bacteria Vibrio Cholerae, specifically the strain Non-01.

Moreover, samples taken from five lakes in the municipality as well as the Nistru River turned out positive for E.coli and other pathogens that can cause acute diarrhea and skin conditions. These are Vatra, the Râşcani Ponds, Valea Morilor, Valea Trandafirilor, and La Izvor.

Tudor Puiu, sanitary doctor at the Public Health Center, advises the public against bathing and fishing in these bodies of water, as there is a risk of getting Hepatitis A or viral meningitis, besides intestinal and skin infections. People should at least shower immediately after swimming in these bodies of water.

Further, sand samples taken at the beach of La Izvor Lake turned out positive for toxocara canis, a helminth parasite of dogs, which can affect both children and adults.
