The inhabitants of Chisinau do not want Dorin Chirtoaca to be mayor, Communist MP Igor Dodon, who was Chirtoaca’s opponent in the June 19 runoff vote, told a news conference on Monday. “Almost half of the people in Chisinau did not want residents will shamefully dismiss the mayor. I’m firmly convinced that the situation in Chisinau will worsen and every person will feel this,” Igor Dodon said, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. The Communist MP said the Liberal Party made everything possible for Dorin Chirtoaca to win the elections, including by exerting pressure on judges. “After pressure was exerted, the ruling alliance went further and deprived us of the possibility of having a chairman of the Chisinau Council. This shows that they are afraid of our team and the party that we represent,” said the lawmaker. Igor Dodon also said that during 30 days he will decide whether to remain MP or to take the seat of municipal councilor. “We will attend the meetings of the Chisinau Municipal Council and will take decisions depending on the work that will be done in the Council and the councilors’ ability to improve things. The decisions should be first of all in the interests of the residents of Chisinau. We want to improve the situation, as the people expect this from us,” said Igor Dodon. Asked by the journalists if it’s true that there are persons inside the PCRM who did not want him to become a mayor, Igor Dodon said there are such persons, but refused to give names. “Persons in district party committees and some of the leaders of the party did not support me, but the party’s head Vladimir Voronin said it clearly that these persons will be penalized. Somebody wants me to leave now,” Igor Dodon said, without giving details. Igor Dodon lost the runoff vote after polling 49.4% of the vote.
