Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban says it’s not the duty of trolleybus drivers and conductors to tell riders to observe the coronavirus rules in place and asks the Ministry of the Interior to “manage” the flow of passengers in the public transit system as traffic is expected to grow with the school year’s start.
The mayor said in a Facebook post that the City Hall was doing everything necessary to create safe conditions on public transport, by providing disinfectant for passengers and subjecting vehicles to regular disinfection, by purchasing more buses and trolleybuses, and by setting up dedicated lanes, among other measures. “But it’s not the City Hall’s duty to do the job of the police”, says the mayor. Today the City Hall has not police force under its jurisdiciton, and Ceban says it’s “so necessary” to restore municipal police.
Ion Ceban noted that during one a year the municipality bought a number of buses and trolleybuses. In particular, 58 buses were purchased from Norway and the Netherlands to be put on suburban routes, and 28 of them have already been received. Ten other buses have arrived from a lot of 100 ISUZU buses purchased by the municipality this year. Another five will undergo technical verification and registration procedures and will be put into service as soon as possible, and 60 trolleybuses have been purchased this year and are already running. Two more articulated trolleybuses will be operational soon. By the end of this year, at least 240 buses and trolleybuses will be brought into the capital city, promises Ion Ceban.
