Chisinau Govt asks World Bank for more money in second Social Investments Fund

The Chisinau Government will ask the World Bank (WB) to add $5 million to a project called 'Second Social Investments Fund in Moldova'. Radu Caruta, a deputy minister of local public administration, has been appointed to negotiate the loan and sign the funding agreement, Info-Prim Neo reports. The project launched in 2004. The loan offered by the International Development Association from the WB group was $20 million. The total cost of the project is $29.17 million, including $3.5 million from the SIDA, $3.6 million from the benefiting communities and $1.4 million from the Moldovan Government. The project pursues to build roads, schools, hospitals, water and gas supply grids in Moldovan villages. It has contributed to raise the efficiency of local public administrations, to enhance entrepreneurship skills, the authors find. The project is to be implemented till March 31, 2010, as 80% of it has been used. That is why the Government asks the WB for additional financing, reads an info note to the draft decision of the Government. The $5 million will be used to implement 45 projects, as priority shall be granted to localities on the Prut's and the Nistru's banks. The funds will be granted as part of the new partnership strategy between the WB and Moldova from 2009 to 2012. The talks will start on February 17.
