The Chisinau General Urban Plan (GUP) has been approved at the recent meeting of the Municipal Council. The document was drawn up by several designing institutions in Chisinau, and specialists from Romania and Belarus. The document draft has been publicly debated since January. The General Urban Plan is a long-term official document meant address urbanism until 2025. Director General of “Urbanproiect” Institute Iurie Povar said at CMC meeting that all the elements of public endowments and services are reflected in the plan. Experts gave priority to territorial development of Chisinau municipality, displaying the tendency to see the capital as a compact and secure settlement, in order to minimize all the expenses related to infrastructure. According to Povar, an increased emphasis has been placed on the economic development of the city, industrial potential, being considered proposals to replace the 40 enterprises situated along the Bac River. According researches, about 75% of the residents in suburbs are concerned with the primary infrastructure supply – water and sewerage, roads, education and environment, investments requested to be performed during the first three years of implementing the Plan intended to refit the Chisinau municipality. As the Romanian expert Nicolae Taralunga says, the Plan includes over 80 programmes and projects in all the fields: economy, social services, urbanism, transport or environment, requiring financial resources. The projects designed to develop Chisinau municipality were worked out by the consortium of “Urbanproiect” Institute, Business Consulting Institute and IHS Romania. The United Nations Development Programme in Moldova has contributed to the elaboration of Chisinau GUP, which costs MDL 9 mln.
