The representatives of local and central public authorities, writers, poets and simple citizens celebrated on Tuesday, June6, in the Stefan cel Mare si Sfant Public Garden, the 207th birthday of the Russian poet Alexandr Pushkin. The event started with laying flowers at the bust of the Russian classic poet by the RM president, Vladimir Voronin, the interim mayor of Chisinau municipality, Vasile Ursu, members of the Government and the ambassador of the Russian Federation to Chisinau, Nicolai Reabov. Sequences of the works of the poet were recited as well. In his speech, Nicolai Reabov appreciated the existent tradition in Moldova to celebrate the poet’s birthday, as well as the fact the presence of Pushkin’s bust in Chisinau. He thanked RM people and state’s leadership for the attitude shown toward the Russian classic poet. The head of the Interethnic Relations Bureau, Olga Goncerov, underscored that, in her opinion, Pushkin influenced the development of the intellectuality in Moldova, and that the Basarabian environment allowed him to create some of his best works. The interim mayor Vasile Ursu also considers that Pushkin wrote everlasting pages in the history of the spiritual development of the Moldovan people. Pushkin’s life in Moldova influenced the works of other two classics – Constantin Negruzzi and Constantin Stamati, the mayor added. Pushkin’s Days in Moldova started on 18 May and concluded on 6 June, the poet’s birthday.
