Ten journalists, bloggers and singers on April 23 will mount a charity bazaar in support of women who are victims of domestic violence. They will sell clothes and accessories from the personal wardrobe and will donate the proceeds to the first assistance and shelter center in the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauz that is intended for female survivors of domestic violence. The center will be opened within the framework of a project implemented by UNDP by the end of this year.
The visitors of the bazaar could buy clothing, footwear, bags, jewels and other accessories that belong to invited persons at reasonable prices. Contacted by IPN for details, project coordinator Vitalie Frecăuțanu said the first assistance and shelter center in Gagauzia will be situated in Chirsova village, where there are fewer services for different socially deprived categories of people.
The center will have the capacity of six places, with a place being intended for a victim of domestic violence and her children. This will house victims of domestic violence for a period of up to six months and its staff will include specialists in domestic violence, such as social assistant, psychologist, psychopedagogue and jurist. “The center will work to prevent domestic violence and to provide assistance and will also inform the public about cases of domestic violence,” stated Vitalie Frecăuțanu.
A sum of US$ 150,000 is needed for building the center. Of this sum, US$ 90,000 was allocated by the UNDP. Negotiations are now held with the regional authorities that will also provide financial support. The goal is to collect US$ 15,000 by the end of May. “We staged this fundraising campaign to show that something can be done not only with money coming from outside, that Moldova is a country where the people contribute to solving the own problems,” said Vitalie Frecăuțanu.
The charity bazaar of April 23 will take place between 4pm and 9pm at the café “Tucano Coffee Brasil”. Donations can be also made through www. sprijina.md.
