The Valea Morilor (Valley of Mills) residential and entertainment area from Chisinau has become a discussion topic for the central authorities. President Vladimir Voronin has held on Friday, September 22, a meeting with the prime-minister, minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, the interim mayor of Chisinau, as well as scientists of the „Apele Moldovei” Republican Group and the „Chisinauproiect” Institute. According to a press release of the Presidency, at the meeting the issue of “reconstructing Valea Morilor Park” was discussed. The interim mayor of Chisinau, Vasile Ursu, declared that this lake has been finished in 1952, and hasn’t been cleaned since 1992. As a result, the mud depth reached 2-3 meters, and the lake became impractical for entertainment. The president pleaded for the general reconstruction of Valea Morilor Park, with the renewal of all objects within it. Until November, the Chisinau City Hall and „Chisinauproiect” Institute will elaborate a project of the rebuilding „Valea Morilor” park, and after its approval the works can commence. Meanwhile, in the closest possible time, the „Valea Morilor” lake will be dried and its cleaning will commence. The meeting from the Presidency was held on the same date when a Government Disposal was published in the “Official Monitor of the Republic of Moldova” regarding the declaration of part of the Valea Morilor park as state property. On Monday, September 25, MERN and the Chisinau City Hall will have a round table on the topic „Valea Morilor Lake – realities and perspectives of its renewal”, during which the situation of the lake and its adjacent area will be examined, as well as how to counter the consequences of the last year’s ecologic disaster. At the end of July, several tonnes of fish from the Valea Morilor Lake died because of oxygen lack caused by the thick mud layer. Ecologists claim that this catastrophe could have been avoided if the municipal authorities wouldn’t have given up for construction sites the terrain meant to deposit and pump the mud to. At the moment, the place meant to be the mud evacuation place, between the lake and Vasile Lupu Street, the foundations of several cottages emerged. When this ecologic catastrophe took place, the interim mayor Vasile Ursu declared this is a natural phenomenon and reminded the Government indicated to reconstruct the Valea Morilor residential district together with the lake. In the immediate vicinity of Valea Morilor Lake one of the most exquisite residential regions is found, where numerous politicians, state officials and businessmen live.
