The Central Election Commission considers the proposal to hold the local general elections on a fixed date is reasonable. In its July 3 meeting, the Commission approved its opinion concerning the draft Government decision on the adoption of the bill to amend Articles 8 and 133 of the Election Code, IPN reports.

CEC vice president Rodica Ciubotaru said the bill provides that the local general elections should take place all over the country once in four years on the third Sunday in October.

According to her, this amendment of the legislation will allow to exclude interpretations and uncertainty about the date of the local general elections. If this proposal is accepted, both the electoral authority and the other authorities involved in the electoral process will be able to plan their activities and resources beforehand.

The State Chancellery recently proposed for public debates a draft Government decision on the adoption of the bill to amend Articles 8 and 133 of the Election Code, which says that the local general elections should be held on the third Sunday in October. The document hasn’t been yet discussed by the Cabinet.

On June 18, Parliament adopted a decision providing that the local general elections will be held on October 20 this year. The terms in office of the current mayors and local councilors expired on June 14, 2019.
