The Central Electoral Commission has prohibited the distribution of the advertising material titled “1000+ important projects for Chisinau” after it found that it contained elements of electoral campaigning.
The Chisinau City Hall and the entities involved in the distribution of the banned material have three days to remove it from circulation.
The decision comes in reaction to a complaint submitted by the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM).
Sergiu Suharenco, PLDM representative, argued that the City Hall’s circular, printed in undetermined numbers, amounted to undue political advantage for the incumbent mayor, who will be seeking a second term in the November general local elections.
Attending the CEC meeting, Chisinau’s Deputy Mayor Ilie Ceban defended the paper saying it was a form of keeping the residents of the city updated about the use of taxpayers’ money. However, the City Hall representatives couldn’t answer how much money was spent on this activity.
