The Central Election Commission (CEC) on July 3 failed to reach an agreement on the results of the repeat elections held on July 1. On Sunday, July 1, repeat elections were held in Zorile commune, Orhei district, for the District Council, Town Council and Mayor. Also, repeat elections were held in Buteni village for the village’s Mayor. After CEC deputy chairman Renata Lapti announced the results of the elections, according to which in Zorile the mayor office was won by the representative of Centrist Union, and in Buteni – by “Moldova Noastra” Alliance, CEC secretary Iurie Ciocan said he will not sign the official report. He stated that in Buteni the elections were illegal and the state power has been directly undermined. On the other hand, CEC member Mihai Busuleac qualified Ciocan’s statements as an attempt to precede the court decision and the invalidation of elections in the settlement. Several members of CEC proposed to make two different official reports for the two settlements, because no objections existed in the case of the elections held in Zorile village. Neither this proposal, nor the approval of the official report accumulated the necessary number of votes. On June 3, in Buteni, the candidate on behalf of AMN accumulated the majority of votes, but the elections were not validated at the request of the Party of Communists. Later, the Supreme Court of Justice decided to exclude the candidate of AMN from the competition. CEC could not make any decision related to the decision of the Court, because the opinions of the members were split, so the AMN candidate participated again in the elections and won again. The Hancesti District Court has to decide on the results of the elections. Previously, the residents of Buteni village protested against the decision to organise repeat elections, saying that after the second ballot they will resume the protest actions if the mandate of the mayor elected by them twice is not validated.
