CC rejects BCS’s claim about ribbon of St. George

The Constitutional Court rejected the request by the MPs of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) to suspend the law by which war symbols, including the ribbon of Saint George, are banned. A decision to this effect was issued by president ad interim Liuba Șova, IPN reports.

The MPs asked the Court to establish the constitutionality of provisions of Articles of Law No. 102 that was published in the Official Gazette on April 20 and to suspend these provisions. They argued the given provisions encroach on basic human rights and freedoms, such as democracy, political pluralism and the freedom of expression, and preconditions for punishing the displaying of the symbols of military glory are created.

CC president ad interim Liuba Șova said that such claims should be based on arguments and it is not enough to invoke articles of the Code of Constitutional Jurisdiction to obtain the suspension of the challenged provisions.

The MPs of the BCS went to the Constitutional Court earlier too, complaining about the provisions that ban war symbols, including the ribbon of Saint George, but their complaint was rejected as inadmissible for the reason that it referred to a bill then, not to an adopted law published in the Official Gazette.
