Cases of food poisoning twice higher in number than last year

The number of cases of food poisoning in the municipality of Chisinau in the first eight months of this year rose by 50% compared with the corresponding period last year. Among the most frequent factors of transmission are the meat products, eggs, salads with mayonnaise, patisseries and candies, IPN reports.

The Chisinau Public Health Center said 1,129 cases of food poisoning were recorded in the period, as opposed to 735 cases in the same period of 2014. In 23.5% of the cases, the products were purchased from municipal markets, while in 25.8% of the cases – from food shops. 6.9% of the cases refer to public eateries.

Specialists recommend purchasing easily alterable foods only from authorized places, not yet from private individuals selling in the street and in improvised markets. The labels should be examined attentively so as to see the date of manufacture and use-by date. Consuming food that was kept at room temperature for more than two hours is not recommended.

Medical assistance should be sought immediately if symptoms of food poisoning appear.
