Cancer Institute doctors suspected of stealing 2.3m lei worth of drugs
Staff members at the national Cancer Institute are suspected of having misappropriated large amounts of free prescription cancer drugs, it was said in a press release from the Center for Combating Economic Crimes and Corruption (CCCEC), which handles the case.
According to CCCEC, the estimated damage to the state budget and the health insurance budget is around 2.3 million lei.
CCCEC learned during the investigation that prescriptions exceeded 2 to 3 times the normal doses. It is to be established now whether the patients were overdosed or the surplus from the inflated prescriptions was stolen.
In 2008 and 2009, the Cancer Institute provided free treatment to 84 persons.
If the embezzlement is proved, those responsible could face up to 25 years' imprisonment.
