Call to organize national cleanup effort on April 8

A number of nongovernmental organizations suggest staging a nationwide cleanup effort on April 8. Representatives of the organizations noted they would like such an effort to become a tradition and to be annually organized one week before Easter. Members of the association called on the population not to remain indifferent and to become involved in such an effort in their communities.

“We must take care both of our homes and of the spaces around them, such as the yards, the streets and why not our quarter. We had very good traditions in the past. Once in two-three Saturdays, we went out to clean up together with the people living on our street, in the vicinity. Half of the village joined in. Such a practice has been forgotten regrettably,” the head of the public association “Welfare” Sergiu Ungureanu stated in a news conference hosted by IPN.

This way, it is proposed staging a national cleanup campaign on April 8. “We invite all the people of good faith, all the organizations and all those who want our country to become a better, cleaner environment to join in his national effort,” urged the head of “Welfare”.

Dina Carpinschi, who heads the association “Spring of Hope”, said that cleaning is indeed an important element of national culture. “Let’s together go out on an agreed day to clean up or to bring things in our country in order. As our ancestors did, we clean our homes before important feast days, but we should not forget about our most important home, Moldova. I want to urge everyone - those from the government and the presidential administration, the students - to take an active part in this effort,” stated Dina Carpinschi.

Vladimir Sterpov, vice director of “Treiunial” Foundation and the People’s Movement “Spiritual Harmony”, said the ecological state of a house, yard, street, locality and the country on the whole represent each of us. If there is litter everywhere, this shows that we do not respect ourselves and our ancestors.

“Time has come for the whole country to remember that tradition as only together we can clean up all over the country. If someone forgot what a collective effort is, we note that this is when neighbors, friends and all the people living on one street come together to build a house, to pick grapes or do something else to help each other. Let’s go out together not only to plant saplings, but to also clean up all over our country,” urged Vladimir Sterpov.
