Broadcast schedule of musical TV channels to contain 30% of national music

The musical TV channels will have to include national music in the amount of 30% in the broadcast schedule. Such a decision was taken by the Broadcasting Coordination Council (BCC) on July 11, IPN reports.

The request was made by the Union of Professional Singers of Moldova, who said that the number of national songs increased over the last two years.

BCC member Dinu Ciocan said the same conditions should be imposed on radio stations. He added that the national music should be broadcast during the day as some of the TV channels transmit it only at night.

According to Council member Mariana Onceanu-Hadarca, such a move would ensure equity. She said that such a practice is used in many countries. “The European legislation specifies such conditions not only for TV channels, but also radio stations,” she added.

“We must think about promotion, but not forget about quality. We should promote, but slowly,” said another member Iurie Colesnic.

As a result of a BCC decision taken in April 2007, the musical TV channels were to broadcast 20% of national music.

By another decision this April, the Council obliged all the TV channels to have at least 30% of national products in the broadcast schedule. But the decision was annulled by the Court of Appeals after 13 media trusts appealed it.
