The president of the Lawyers Union Emanoil Ploșnița demands that the prosecutor general and his deputies should be dismissed and that the role played by the  prosecution service in Moldova should be reviewed. “The Prosecutor General’s Office, in the period while it has been headed by Eduard Harunjen, didn’t show objectivity and equity in criminal proceedings, didn’t ensure the protection of human rights, as it is stipulated in the European Convention, didn’t ensure the equality of everyone before the law and the respect for the principle of equality of arms and based prosecutions on evidence obtained illegally and the dismissal of the prosecutor general is the only and most correct solution in such circumstances,” runs a statement made public by Emanoil Ploșnița.

Representatives from the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the National Anticorruption Center and the Agency for Ill-Gotten Gains Recovery on July 2 met with an IMF delegation for a presentation of how the investigation goes into the bank fraud. “The meeting aimed to provide objective information to development partners about the volume of work done by the Moldovan law enforcement towards bringing those involved in the fraud to justice and towards recovering the embezzled money,” it is said in a press release of the National Anticorruption Center.

The responsible prosecutors must be held accountable for thwarting the investigation into the bank fraud. These sequestrated the assets of persons suspected of involvement in the fraud with a great delay and some of these assets were thus sold. It will be now difficult for the state as it could suffer legal and financial consequences if it is in litigation with the new owners, stated ex-minister of finance Veaceslav Negruța. According to him, the Second Kroll Report on the bank fraud should be the culminating point that would reveal names, jurisdictions and other details about those involved in the theft of banking funds. The delay in investigating the bank fraud created space and time for the money to be moved to other parts, to be used and not to be recovered for Moldova’s public interests. Too much time passed and the possibility of recovering the money diminishes daily.

The Republic of Moldova didn’t invest in the improvement of the goods qualities of the persons in detention who later return to society. Investments were made rather in the destruction of the human being and human dignity, chairman of the Parliament’s commission on national security, defense and public order Kiril Moțpan stated after a group of MPs paid a fact-finding visit to Penitentiary No. 13 in Chisinau. The MPs could open some of the cells at random and discuss with detainees. They didn’t come across ex-Premier Vlad Filat, businessman Veaceslav Platon or activist of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” Gheorghe Petic. They established that measures should be taken to change the attitude of penitentiaries’ managers to detainees.

On President Iohannis’s initiative, a working group was set up in Bucharest from representatives of relevant ministries, who will team up with colleagues from Chisinau to identify where assistance is most needed, followed by concrete projects. During a press conference in Bucharest held alongside visiting Prime Minister Maia Sandu, Klaus Iohannis said Romania stands ready to facilitate and improve the dialogue between the Moldovan government and Brussels.

The Superior Council of Magistrates has launched the process of nominating two Constitutional Court candidates, with Parliament and Government making similar announcements on July 2. President Igor Dodon welcomed the start of the nomination process. “I firmly believe this country needs honest and virtuous professionals to restore the prestige of the Constitutional Court and confidence of the people and the international community,” Dodon posted to Facebook.

Alina Russu gave up the post of Central Electoral Commission chairperson by submitting a formal request to Parliament today. “The application in practice of the recent amendments to the electoral law could raise suspicions about the independence of decisions made by the higher electoral bodies”, she explained. In a post on CEC’s Facebook account, Alina Russu further stated: “It was not a simple decision, but fully responsible. Throughout my tenure I had carried out my duties in accordance with the legislation to ensure citizens’ both the right to elect and to be elected.”.

The leader of the public association Unirea-ODIP Vlad Biletski  accuses the administration of the Committee for Saving the Cemetery of Romanian Heroes in Chisinau of sabotaging the project to repair the fence, poles and stairs at the cemetery. Vlad Biletski said it is sad when the unionists quarrel between them. “We were sabotaged not by the Socialists or other opponents of ours, but by persons who joined us in the fight. How can one submit a complaint to the Prosecutor’s Office over such a noble thing as the repair of the cemetery?” he asked rhetorically.
