“Bribe for judges” case sent to court

The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation into the “bribe for judges” case based on five counts was sent to court. Ten persons will stand trial in this case, IPN reports.

The case features a prosecutor from Chisinau, a lawyer, a judge and an ex-judge of the Chisinau Appeals Court, two judges of the Chisinau City Court, a judicial assistant and two private individuals.

The judicial assistant and one of the private individuals were placed under house arrest, while the lawyer, the judge of the Chisinau Appeals Court and one of the judges of the Chisinau City Court are under judicial control. The others were investigated outside remand.

According to the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, the persons are accused of influence peddling, passive corruption, active corruption, interference in the administration of justice and intentional passing of an illegal judgement.

The judges are prosecuted for asking for and taking sums of money for passing favorable sentences in a number of cases they tried. The lawyer and the prosecutor involved in the scheme passed on money from the interested persons to the judges, while the doctor and the other private individual offered the money for having favorable decisions passed in cases that involved them.
