Boris Volosatîi drops out of Chisinau mayoral race

Boris Volosatîi, the candidate of the Democracy at Home Party (PDA) and also the headmaster of Gheorghe Asachi School in Chisinau, is quitting the mayoral race. The announcement was made at a press conference held by the European Civic Movement, which called on other “Euro-Unification” candidates to withdraw in favor of a single candidate who is more likely to win.

Boris Volosatîi says he is willing to throw his support behind a candidate who shares his Romanian ideals, urging four other candidates that he identifies as “Euro-Unificationists” – Octavian Țîcu, Vladimir Țurcanu, Valeriu Munteanu and Dorin Chirtoaca – to show responsibility, have a discussion and let the candidate with the highest chances remain in the race.

The leader of the PDA, Vasile Costiuc, says the withdrawal of the party’s candidate should be taken as a signal that the interest for a “pro-unification Chisinau” is above everything else and is meant to avoid the danger “that everybody can see: Russians conquering Chisinau.”

Valentin Dolganiuc, a member of the first Parliament, said that an alarming situation has been created in Chisinau and there is a risk “of losing the capital city in favor of the hostile forces of our nation.” Valentin Dolganiuc warns all candidates that they will be made responsible for destroying the pro-unification segment.

Alecu Reniţă, also a member of the first Parliament, stated that hope is not lost. The former deputy expressed that “there will be sufficient reason […] there will be an agreement for Chisinau to not be given to foreign forces.”

The historian Ion Negrei said that in Moldova the events go in a direction which doesn’t benefit Moldovan citizens. “Forces that are alien to our national cause want to take over all state institutions.” At the same time, “the developments that take place on the unionist segment mislead the population and divide it.”

The historian Anatol Petrencu said that “a great danger comes over Chisinau, it is going to be stolen and made Russian.” In his opinion, the capital must remain a Romanian city, as it has been until now.
