Aurelian Lavric: PSRM becomes involved in relationship with EU less for electoral reasons

There are people in the Government and Parliament who realize the necessity of having good relations with the EU and of fulfilling the conditions imposed by it. But a component of the parliamentary majority, the Party of Socialists (PSRM), does not become involved in the relations with the EU too much for electoral reasons, doctor Aurelian Lavric, expert in geopolitics, university professor, stated in the public debate “About the quality of the EU-RM relationship through the angle of the six, old and new conditions” that was staged by IPN News Agency..

Aurelian Lavric said that when it goes to the relations with the EU, it is important to take into account the political principles and ideologies promoted by those who are in power. “The current ruling alliance consists of a party that said it is pro-European and of another party, of the left. As President Igor Dodon declared, this last party swiftly turned from a party that was for entry into the Eurasian Union to a political force that now pleads for balanced relations, both with the EU and with Russia,” he stated.

According to the professor, the Socialists most probably bank on the votes of a part of the voters who believe the relations with Russia are very important. There are also nostalgic voters. “I don’t remember when the President had a meeting with the ambassador of the EU in Chisinau. There are particular obstacles that can be easily overcome if the authorities realize and assume this reality that is for the country’s benefit,” said the expert in geopolitics.

As regards the opposition parties, the expert said these say they are pro-European, have very good relations with the European institutions and enjoy support among these. “Surely, the European Union, at least through the voice of a MEP, openly states its support for these parties. We will see the struggle that will be given in the presidential elections and then in the next elections, if snap elections are held. So, the stake of elections will be: for the parties, forces that say they are pro-European to manage to come to power by enjoying the EU’s support,” said Aurelian Lavric.

In another development, the expert said the politicians realize the necessity of having good relations with the EU and of exactly following the EU’s recommendations as these are for the country’s and the people’s benefit. “Being in power, they promise this and say that they want the people to live better. Without a good relationship with the European Union, we cannot live better, owing to the financial assistance that the EU offers and can offer top us,” he concluded.

The debate “About the quality of the EU-RM relationship through the angle of the six, old and new conditions” was the 147th installment of the debates project “Developing political culture through public debates” that is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
