Athletes honored at the 2024 Sports Gala

The year 2024 was an exceptional year for Moldovan sport, a year in which the Republic of Moldova proved to the whole world that it has the strength to shine on the most important international arenas. Moldovan athletes won a record number of 731 medals in Olympic, Paralympic and non-Olympic competitions, demonstrating outstanding performances in all age categories, Education Minister Dan Perciun said at the 2024 Sports Gala, IPN reports.

According to Dan Perciun, the athletes' successes have helped to promote Moldova's image. 31 athletes have qualified for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, a record number. Moldova won several bronze medals and two silver medals at these Games.

The country's President Maia Sandu said that each medal brought by Moldovan athletes contributes to the promotion of Moldova's positive image internationally.

"You have demonstrated to the world that Moldova is a country full of talent and potential. You have shown that Moldova can do it!", the head of state said.

Maia Sandu also praised the work of coaches, doctors and athletes' families. "Sport can be a powerful tool for social change. I encourage you to make the most of it and contribute to our country's project: joining the EU", said Maia Sandu.

The best athletes of the year in Olympic and Paralympic events are Sergey Tarnovschi (kayak-canoe), bronze medalist at the Paris Olympics, and Anastasia Nichita (women's wrestling), silver medalist at the Paris Olympics.

Surprise of the Year is Adil Osmanov (judo) and Ana Dulce (shooting).

Revelation of the Year: Daniela Cociu and Daniela Olărașu (kayak-canoeing).

Talent of the Year: Vitalie Eriomenco (Greco-Roman wrestling) and Nicoleta Cojocaru (weightlifting).

People's Sympathy: Alexandru Paraschiv (boxing) and Elizaveta Liutova (marathon runner).
