Archeological monuments in Moldova are not protected

The cultural heritage, especially the archeological one, is in a deplorable condition. As there are no specialized institutions to protect the monuments, Moldova loses valuable works that are 100 to several hundreds years of age, Deputy Minister of Culture Gheorghe Postica said at a roundtable meeting held by the National Association of Young Historians of Moldova on March 9, Info-Prim Neo reports. There are over 8,000 archeological monuments in Moldova that are not protected, including Orheiul Vechi, the monuments in Tipova and Saharna, Gheorghe Postica said, stressing that laws should be adopted in accordance with the European conventions on the protection of the cultural patrimony. The Ministry of Culture intends to draft a state program on cultural heritage and a strategy for implementing it together with the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. Sergiu Musteata, the head of the National Association of Young Historians, said legislation should be formulated and viable infrastructure created in order to prevent illegal archeological excavations, thefts and illegal trade in antiquities. “Cultural objects from Moldova are sold on European antiquarian markets. Why aren't these objects protected and what does the police do?,” Sergiu Musteata asked. There are five bills that will be submitted to the Government and then merged into a Cultural Patrimony Code, Gheorghe Postica said in this connection.
