The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) is disposed to initiate works to fix up the aqueducts running in the perimeter of I. Creanga and V. Belinschi streets and on Uzinelor St, Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communiqué from SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau” (ACC). The water mains in these parts of the city are worn-out and there is a risk that the supply of water to the consumers in Buiucani district of Chisinau and in Bubueci village will be discontinued. Digging works are carried out in the perimeter of these streets and the damaged roadway cannot be restored in due time so that there are problems with the traffic, the communiqué says. According to SA “Apa-Canal Chisinau”, the old pipes will be replaced with new pipes from ductile cast iron. The aqueducts that are to be repaired are 2,800 meters long. The repair works are assessed at over 10 million lei. Mihai Mazurean, the head of the Technical Department of the ACC, said that the repair works on the aqueduct going along Studentilor St, which is 300 mm in diameter, are being completed. According to him, the steel pipes are replaced with pipes from ductile cast iron that are made from special anticorrosion material inside. Their working life is over 50 years. The ACC will start using again this technology after a five-year pause. During this period, the loan offered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development was used to replace over 110 km of aqueduct with pipes from ductile cast iron and polyethylene. Mihai Mazurean said that the aqueducts in the mentioned streets are over 30 years old, but the working life of a steel pipe is 20 years at the most. At the end of last year, “Apa-Canal Chisinau” replaced the aqueducts from Putna and Florilor streets. They are about 1,500 meters long and have a diameter of 300 mm. The decision to replace the pipes was made following frequent leaks caused by the advanced electrochemical corrosion degree of the steel pipes.
