The nomination of Ion Druta as president of the Supreme Court of Justice was expected. The fact that there was only one candidate does not mean that other judges didn’t want to take part in the employment contest, but the results of this were predictable. The issue was developed in the talk show “Politics of Natalia Morari” produced by TV8 channel, IPN reports.
Vlad Gribincea, chairman of the Legal Resources Center, said it was clear that Ion Druta will be appointed president of the Supreme Court of Justice, especially to those who know the procedures. Only Ion Druta asked to have his activity assessed for taking part in this contest. “It was clear for me 3-4 weeks before the contest. Given that there was only one candidate, there was no choice,” he stated.
Vlad Gribincea also said that the Supreme Court of Justice has 33 judges and he does not believe that at least some of these didn’t want to apply for the post of president. In the previous contests to fill this post, there were more applicants. Those who wanted probably didn’t apply because everything was foreseeable.
Former judge of the Superior Council of Magistracy Teodor Carnat said it is legal for the contest to involve only one candidate. “If there is only one candidate, this does not mean that the law is violated, but there is also the principle of alternative. Any body and any citizen should have an alternative. This principle of alternative is not respected,” he stated. The jurist assumed that other judges didn’t want to apply for Supreme Court of Justice president because they didn’t want the journalists to analyze their CVs and previous activities.
On May 3, Ion Druta was named president of the Supreme Court of Justice for a four-year term by Parliament. He was the only candidate who took part in the employment contest held by the Superior Council of Magistracy.
