The National Bank of Moldova is developing an app that will allow citizens to discover the story of each commemorative coin by scanning a QR code. With this initiative, the NBM aims to combine tradition with technology. The governor of the National Bank, Anca Dragu, spoke about the app in the podcast "The Meaning of Money", IPN reports.
"The security of money is a subject of negotiations in this process of accession to the European Union. But I want to tell you what we are doing. Artificial intelligence, digitization, coins, commemorative coins - we are making a QR code through which you can access information about that commemorative coin and now we are working on an app that will lead us to a more extensive story of each coin," says the NBM governor.
The head of the National Bank said the app is to be finalized in a few months. "Every citizen of the Republic of Moldova, and not only, should enter the website of the National Bank and there they can have access to such an application and learn more about the coins we issue, commemorative coins," Anca Dragu noted.
It was also noted that, starting December 2, 2024, the NBM will directly sell commemorative coins. This initiative facilitates public access to these unique coins, strengthening the link between the institution and citizens.
"We amended the legislation, there was a little bit unclear in the legislation - whether we are allowed to sell these commemorative coins or not. We have made it clear that the National Bank which is in charge, has this function of issuing commemorative coins, also sells them. Anyone can buy it either from the National Bank or from commercial banks that have a number of coins and sell them to their customers," the governor added.
The podcast was also attended by Octavian Schen, Director General of the Romanian State Mint. It discussed the long-standing collaboration between the two institutions. This relationship has led to the development of flagship projects, such as the issuance of commemorative coins, which highlight the history, culture and art of the Republic of Moldova.
The fourth episode of the podcast "The Meaning of Money" is produced with the support of USAID's Moldova Institutional and Structural Reforms in Moldova (MISRA) program.
