The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office Veronica Dragalin sees no reasons for merging the institution with the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS). At a news conference, when asked to comment on Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru's statements about a possible merger of the two prosecutors' office, Veronica Dragalin replied that the problem that is to be solved is not clear to her, IPN reports.
The head of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office noted that she does not know what the authorities' intentions are. "I was not invited to hearings in Parliament. So, I don't know what are the ultimate goals of these changes," said Veronica Dragalin, adding that she gets information from the press on this subject.
Dragalin also said that there are urgent things that need to be done, which have been talked about for a long time, and that she will continue her work in the interests of the citizens, during her 5-year term as chief prosecutor of the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office.
On January 29, Minister of Justice, Veronica Mihailov-Moraru confirmed that the Anticorruption Prosecutors Office could be merged with the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases. In a press briefing, the minister noted that the merger of the two institutions, as well as other institutional models, are to be discussed on a parliamentary platform with the involvement of all the interested parties.
In reaction to the minister's statements, the APP told IPN that no plausible or convincing arguments were presented to justify the need for such a merger. "We believe that this proposal does not meet the current requirements and challenges in the fight against corruption and organized crime," said the quoted source.
