Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu said the judicial system has undergone radical reforms during the last few years and these created all the preconditions for the judges to have a comfortable legal framework and to serve the people. However, among the challenges faced by judges in Moldova and in the other states of the region is the risk to transform justice into an industry that generates incomes. The Speaker made such statements in the annual meeting of the European Association of Judges that is held in Chisinau, IPN reports.
“Surely, the maintaining and consolidation of a modern judicial system is a long-lasting activity. There are yet many things to be done, but we have already learned many lessons. And this is the most important thing that we did, including by reforms that passed through Parliament with difficulty. The political influence was removed from justice. Now the independence of judges is a reality that they should assume,” said Andrian Candu.
Ion Druta, president of the Association of Judges of Moldova, which is the host of the event, said the meeting will center of subjects of major interest for society, given that equitable justice is the foundation for the rule of law by definition. The spirit of cooperation inside the European Association of Judges shows the will of the states to switch over to a new stage of cooperation and reformation.
“I think that this event is a very useful exercise for the justice of the Republic of Moldova, which will stimulate the partnership between state institutions and society in general. Moreover, I’m convinced that we will exchange ideas, will contribute to the development of the spirit of multilateral cooperation in justice so that we pave the way for a dynamic involvement in ambitious projects to meet the European standards,” said Ion Druta.
President of the Supreme Court of Justice Mihai Poalelungi said the judges are the main players who interpret and pronounce the law. They balance out the actions of the two powers – the legislative power and the executive one. The judges are not and should not be message carriers of the rulers.
The annual meeting of the European Association of Judges brought together judges from over 40 countries. The European Association of Judges is the regional group of the International Association of Judges.
