Andrian Candu: Army could soon not recognize Dodon as President

The Constitutional Court’s decision will break the institutional impasse created by President Igor Dodon’s refusal to name the ruling alliance’s candidate Eugen Sturza minister of defense, considers Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu.

“The Army could soon not recognize Dodon as President, as far as I know. But President Dodon makes a rod for his own back and gets into a trap when he refuses to fulfill the constitutional provision,” the Speaker was quoted by IPN as saying after the traditional meeting of the PDM’s administration.

Andrian Candu noted that Igor Dodon is obliged to name Sturza minister of defense after the Government fielded this the second time. “The Constitution clearly provides that he is obliged to accept the candidate for minister the second time and he should do it, either he likes it or not. He is in opposition to the current power and behaves as such. We understand him, but we want to avoid institutional blockages,” he stated.

The Government requested the Constitutional Court to interpret Article 98, par. (6) of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and determine the actions that can be taken by the Premier and the decisions that can be adopted by Parliament if the President of the Republic of Moldova rejects the candidate for minister the second time.
