Amount of foreign investments per capita in Moldova – lowest in Europe

The Republic of Moldova has the lowest amount of foreign investments per capita compared to European countries, declared on Wednesday, May 30, the Minister of Economy and Commerce, Valeriu Lazar, during at hearings performed by the parliamentary commission for foreign policy and European integration, on the chapter Action Plan Moldova-European Union. According to Lazar, in 2005, the Republic of Moldova registered a record number of direct foreign investments, but their absolute value is insignificant, compared to other countries. At the same time, it is very important that the dynamics are positive, says the minister. Mr. Lazar also remarked the fact that foreign investments in countries like Bulgaria, Romania or Hungary started to increase after these countries expressed their firm intention to join EU, while Moldova formulated this option recently. The biggest problem in attracting foreign investors and establishing a favorable environment for investors in the Republic of Moldova is, according to Lazar, the imperfection of the juridical system. The legislation of Moldova is good, but there are problems regarding its implementation”, concluded the minister of Economy and Commerce. In 2005, the amount of foreign investments was of 260 million USD or, by 9% more comparing to 2004.
